100 Days of Happiness, Day 3 - When Hunger Strikes!

Often, when we refer to the concept of happiness, we focus on ourselves.

'I wish I were happier!' 'What can I do to make myself happy?' 'I feel the happiest I've been in ages!'

...and yes, I hear you, the person speaking aloud while reading this! You're right to ask, "What's wrong with that?!"  There's nothing wrong with that at all. It's ok to want to be happier. In fact sometimes, the honesty that lives in acknowledging the presence or lack of personal happiness tends to be what's missing from our lives - and those of the people in this world.

Yesterday I chose to flip the script and ensure that someone else's happiness was met before my own. Day 3 on my pursuit to 100 Days of Happiness.

As I stood outside Oxford Circus station, I was approached by a 5 ft 2ish man on a mission, determined to catch the attention of a bunch of unwilling London professionals and failing miserably.  Tired and unforgiving was an understatement. He walked past me, and it wasn't until he reached the fifth or sixth person in the crowd that I'd finally got it. I wouldn't even say I was over come with guilt, it was more the fact that I'd realised I had something that he needed, and I needed to give it up.

Those of you who know my Nan (stay with me on this, I've got a point coming, I promise!) Comfort ( yes, that is really her name!) will know just how hilariously outspoken she is. She has an opinion and an anecdote for just about any and everything, and at that moment in time, all I could remember was some advice she gave me in Brixton market some 7/8 years ago; "If someone vulnerable asks you for money, ask them what they need it for, and if you can, buy it for them instead."

So that's what I did. I was on the move, through the crowd, with nothing but the numerous shaking heads of disapproval and the grunts of uninterested people leading me to where the determined man had reached.

"Excuse me. You want food right?" I asked unashamedly.
"Yes, I want money to buy food."
"Ok. How about I come with you and pay for it for you?"

He nodded, confused by my proposition, but following me nonetheless.

So off we went. Marching up the road, with me turning round every so often to ensure my new friend  was following closely behind me, all the way until we reached our 5* Michelin restaurant of choice - McDonalds.

We settled on a box of 20 nuggets 'to share', with the irony being that I wasn't allowed to 'share' any of them, haha! Bless Loré - I found out his name and his nationality after a super long conversation in French, yes French! I always knew those GCSE lessons would come in handy at some point. He told me of his dislike for the home he was living in back in Nice, and how turbulent his family life had been. It was a sad account and recollection of his past,  but was quickly softened by the sound of laughter (his, not mine) that followed when I told him how I old I was. He insisted that I looked  'douze ans'. Thanks Lorè. Thanks.

He kept thanking me, and I kept apologising, a somewhat contradictory exchange of words, but one which I'm very thankful to have had with this guy. I was grateful for the chance to amend what I perceived to have been an error. He tucked in and I set off to continue my evening.

Happiness to me: An emotion experienced personally or shared with others, illustrating satisfaction, contentment, joy and compassion. That's what I was able to share with this guy.

Au Revoir Loré,

100 days of Happiness!

Pharell, I wanna thank ya!

What probably started off as a passing idea, or in true Yankee style 'just a little bit of fun', has now become a global and viral phenomenon.

I bet he wasn't expecting that sort of response! #yeahbuddy #winning

At the beginning of the year, I created a 'Jar full of Thankfulness' and set off on a journey of being 'more thankful' - no matter how big or small the breakthrough was. I would write the instance on a piece of paper, fold it up and pop it in the jar.

I won't lie, I fell off after around 16 days. I didn't beat myself up about it though, as I saw it as an opportunity to be more mindful, reactive and thankful, remembering just how blessed and favoured each and every day is.

So... I'm back on it, but with a twist. With thankfulness comes happiness and contentment, and I'm choosing to focus on just that. Thanks Pharell!  I'll be sharing a picture or post every day (or there a outs) over the next one hundred days *gulps* that constitute happiness and contentment from my point of view... starting from today!

Day one of happiness encompasses the concept of friendship! Happy Birthday to my crazy partner in crime, laughter and ambition, Vanessaaaaaa!

Many more crazy days to come #100daysofhappinNESS (see what I did there?) #day1

Oh hey - I'm an ORS Brand Ambassador!

I can't believe it's been a week already. Last Saturday I became an ORS Brand Ambassador, and I couldn't have asked for a greater opportunity or group of people to be doing this with. We had a fab day filming at the O2 Arena yesterday ahead of Beyoncè's performance (twice in a week for me #jackpot !) and I really enjoyed having an opportunity to champion the brand and introduce the team to my crazy little ways!

ORS has been a staple line for me, purely because of its moisturising ability. There's nothing worse than limp, dry hair, so products like the Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo and Replenishing Conditioner have served me really well for a number of years now.

I began my transition from relaxed to natural hair a little over a year ago, after spending lots of time hesitating (lol!) researching and reminiscing on what my hair was like during my pre-relaxer days. While I didn't, and still do not have any qualms with the relaxer process, I decided to go ahead and give in to curiosity by growing my hair back to its natural state. I'd be fibbing if I said there weren't days where I missed that 'swishy swishy' feeling you get when leaving the Salon on 'retouch day' (ladies, I know you can testify!) ... So maaaaaaybe, just maybe, I'll return to it one day!

I'll be spending the next few months testing a few products, sharing my progress in pictures and doing a few giveaways...starting tonight!  I'm giving five people the chance to win an ORS Goody bag, and all you have to do is comment on this post with the words 'Thanks ORS' by 5pm tomorrow.

I'll announce the winner on Sunday once we've all overcome the fatigue induced by Sunday dinners! #foodcoma

Good luck!

Lauren Crown talks new EP, The Love Tomorrow

Meet Lauren Crown - Ambassador of self-love, and appreciator of all things 'here and now'.

The Scottish born 20-something whose style derives from the Folk and Soul genres has earned social followings from soul artists such as Tweet, (no pun intended, I promise) Marsha Ambrosius and Lalah Hathaway while on her musical journey to edifying the loveless.

Crown's voice is a stupefaction. Her candid tones and beat-based backing tracks come together to present a short diary style account for her new EP, 'The Love Tomorrow' - part two of a trilogy that'll  place the crown on the heads and in the hearts of listeners in the UK...and undoubtedly beyond.

Give me Love is my favourite track. A commendably honest tale of  Crown's pursuit for self contentment, acceptance and love spoken from the heart of a hopeful woman. Melodically, it echoes many of the components found in old school 90s soul, but is artistically crowned with a classy touch of modernity.

The four track EP is a great continuation of expression following Lauren's first compilation, The Adult Youth which was released last April, and brings with it the reassertion that less truly is more.

Download a free copy of The Love Tomorrow EP from www.laurencrown.com on Friday 7th March.

Would you dare to bare?

...so I've woken up and tackled my usual morning news crawl, and I've found myself being totally inspired by a News Anchor from Tennessee, America.

I'm a firm believer in actions speaking louder than words, but when the two are delivered simultaneously, you've got me totally sold!

Kudos to Pam McKelvy - a small town girl, with big town bravery.

Check out how a morning broadcast on this particular day came with a little extra added flavour by clicking here: http://metro.co.uk/2014/03/02/news-anchor-who-had-cancer-takes-off-wig-during-live-broadcast-4377130/
